Voice rooms and calls are live

DevConnect has voice now. Every community has voice rooms — General, Pair Programming and Help & Debugging are already set up. You join one and talk, that's it. When you join you pick one of three modes: Listen: your mic stays off, nobody can hear you Voice: you can speak Video: you can speak and turn your camera on if you want Joining never turns on your mic by itself, and the video mode doesn't turn on your camera either. You have to click it. You can also call someone directly from their profile or from a chat. This only works between people who follow each other, and you can turn off incoming calls in your profile settings. That doesn't affect voice rooms, you can still join those. Rooms are limited to 6 people right now. There's no media server behind it yet, so everyone sends audio to everyone, and above six the quality drops for the whole room. I'd rather cap it than have it sound bad. Other things from this week: - #tags in a post are real tags now. Write #react and it gets linked, and there's a /tags page to browse them - The post editor is a lot wider on desktop - Chat separates rooms from private messages - You can pin a post to your profile, and community owners can pin one in their community - The app can be installed now, it's in the menu Voice has only been tested by two people so far, so there will be rough edges. If something breaks, let me know. A few things I'd like to hear about: - Does audio keep working when someone turns their camera on during a call? - If you hang up, does it end for the other person too? - On mobile, can you still use the rest of the site during a call? Reply here or send me a DM. Benjamin
